Quarterback Caleb Williams was grateful for the way Bob Stoops stepped in to lead the Oklahoma football team in the Alamo Bowl against the Oregon Ducks.
The Oklahoma Sooners got a huge break when Bob Stoops stepped in to take over for the Alamo Bowl after Lincoln Riley left for the USC Trojans. Riley’s abrupt and controversial departure following the loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Bedlam caused some chaos for the folks in Norman, but Stoops was able to return and help keep the Sooners steady.
It was only for one game, but Stoops regained control of the program that he once guided for 18 seasons.
Of course, that made a difference for guys like Caleb Williams, the young starting quarterback for the Sooners. Following Oklahoma’s Alamo Bowl win over the Oregon Ducks, Williams made sure to express his gratitude for Stoops’ leadership and the way he helped the Sooners move forward.
@CoachBobStoops can’t thank you enough for what you did in the situation we were in. Means a lot to me and for the guys on the team! Truly an honor and thanks again! I gotcha hat if you need it lol #stoopssssssssssssssss

Oklahoma football: Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams thanks legendary Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops
It didn’t take Stoops long to respond. In a tweet, the coaching legend said the decision was “easy” and called the move the “right thing to do,” and he’s not wrong. Riley leaving for USC the way he did put Oklahoma and its players in a tough position.
It was easy to do because it was the right thing to do! I appreciate all of you guys accepting me. I promise you this is the place to be. @CoachVenables and @Coach_Leb will keep this thing rollin! Keep the hat for an NIL deal!! https://t.co/VAE9lEYaG2

The Sooners and their fans should forever be grateful for Stoops and the way he helped fill in the gap as Oklahoma found its new head coach. Most programs aren’t anywhere near that fortunate when their head coach ends up leaving for another job. This isn’t the norm for most places. Oklahoma got lucky.
