Mike Tomlin just enraged all of Steeler Nation with his comments about offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

Steelers fans who wanted the team to move on from offensive coordinator Matt Canada after one season as OC, look away.

Canada’s offense was entirely predictable this season, as the Steelers set record lows in several marks. It’s unfair to place all of that on Canada, as having an aging quarterback in Ben Roethlisberger behind a young offensive line surely didn’t help matters. But, Canada failed to show any originality or creativity on offense, and that’s literally in his job description.

The Steelers offense was at its best when Roethlisberger ignored Canada, essentially going rogue in the hurry-up offense. Unfortunately, those scenarios were few and far between.

Steelers: Mike Tomlin optimistic about Matt Canada’s offense

“I’m optimistic about Matt and what he’s capable of doing. I acknowledge we took a step back. There’s some obvious tangible reasons why that occurred… we got to be better. We intend to be,” Tomlin said in his press conference on Tuesday.

This plays out one of two ways for the Steelers. Either Canada is able to enrich his system with a quarterback who’s slightly more mobile and a better fit, or he goes out in flames. My money is on the latter.

The worst possible scenario would be Canada getting access to a young, promising passer, and then completely wasting that talent early on.

Considering the current quarterback crop in the 2022 class, however, the best odds would be on the Steelers signing an established veteran this offseason. Tomlin went as far as to say he valued QB mobility, so expect the Steelers to prioritize this moving forward. Roethlisberger was as stationary as ever the last two years.

Pittsburgh fans have every right to be angry with Canada and the Steelers, but expect him to get one more chance without being hamstrung by Roethlisberger.
