Tom Brady replacements: 3 quarterbacks Bucs can add if he retires
By Scott Rogust
If quarterback Tom Brady is to retire this offseason, here are three potential replacements for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tom Brady was on the verge of another legendary playoff comeback against the Los Angeles Rams, but lost at the buzzer on a game-winning field goal by Matt Gay. After the elimination, Brady hinted that the final decision as to whether he will play or retire will hinge on what his family wants to do.
On Friday, a report from CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora said that those close to Brady believe that he will announce his retirement from the NFL.
Whether that turns out to be the case remains to be seen. But, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have to have some sort of contingency plan in case Brady is to walk away. The Bucs do have options as early as this offseason to find a replacement.
Here are three potential options for the Buccaneers if Brady were to walk away.
3. Malik Willis, Liberty
The easiest way for Tampa Bay to find Brady’s successor is through the NFL Draft.
The Buccaneers are slated to select from the No. 27 spot following their Divisional Round elimination by the Rams. Based off their positioning, top quarterback options in Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Ole Miss’ Matt Corral will be off the board. One option they should keep in mind is Liberty’s Malik Willis.
The senior quarterback has the ability to make plays not just with his arm, but with his legs as well. This past season, Willis threw for 2,837 yards, 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while running for 878 yards and 13 touchdowns on 197 carries.
Willis may be available late in the first-round, but if he impresses throughout the pre-draft process, the Buccaneers may have to trade up to select him.
