Packers: Brian Gutekunst gives clue on plan to sway Aaron Rodgers
By Mark Powell
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst gave plenty of clues on their offseason plans, and the majority of it has to do with Aaron Rodgers.
Gutekunst didn’t close the door on any player staying or leaving the organization, so perhaps we should start there. The Packers welcome any and all help in this situation.
Yet, his most intriguing response had to do with Rodgers. While Gutekunst did acknowledge there’s a chance both Rodgers and Davante Adams could leave Green Bay, he intends on keeping the duo together.
First, Gutekunst gave a hopeful update on Adams, saying the goal isn’t to simply franchise tag him. That avoids a potential holdout come training camp. Next, Gutekunst suggested Rodgers will not be traded.
“Because I think we’ve got as good of a shot as anybody to go win a Super Bowl next year. He’s the MVP of the league, and that’s our goal. I think we have an opportunity to do it right now,” Gutekunst further explained, per Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.
The Packers plan, it would appear, is to bring back anyone closely associated with Rodgers. This includes Randall Cobb, and Za’Darius Smith if need be. That’s been the Packers’ plan all along.
Packers trade rumors: Will Green Bay deal Aaron Rodgers?
Per Rodgers previous comments, and the assurance from Gutekunst, the options for No. 12 are primarily retire or come back to Green Bay. Yet, were Rodgers to tell Gutekunst he wants out, the player holds all the power in that situation. Gutekunst would surely take him at his word and receive draft picks in return from, say, the Broncos.
But for now, Rodgers appears happy with the Packers, as they’ve included him in personnel decisions. This includes bringing on Tom Clements as an offensive assistant.
The Packers learned the hard way not to keep a star quarterback in the dark. They made good on a second chance, courtesy of Rodgers, and now give him Tom Brady-like privileges.
Will that be enough to keep him another season?
