The Green Bay Packers want to work things out with Davante Adams, despite the fact it’ll likely cost them.

Adams is a prime franchise tag candidate, especially since the Packers are in a tough salary cap situation entering the offseason. Yet, general manager Brian Gutekunst is saying all the right things about Adams, even insinuating he’d like to sign the best wide receiver in football to a long-term contract.

That sure would make Aaron Rodgers happy.

While Gutekunst did say the hope was to sign Adams to a contract extension, he also mentioned there’s a chance the Packers let him walk in free agency if he’s unwilling to meet them halfway.

“Yeah, possibly. There’s a lot of things to be determined there,” Gutekunst stated when asked about letting Adams leave via free agency.

So basically anything could happen.

Packers: Davante Adams unlikely to be franchise tagged

The franchise tag for wide receivers is expected to be north of $19 million this offseason, per Over The Cap. At that rate, the Packers would be better off trying to sign Adams long-term in hopes that sways Rodgers to stay at least another year as well.

As much as Gutekunst doesn’t want to use the franchise tag on Adams, the option exists for a reason — so the Packers don’t risk letting their star wide receiver walk for nothing.

The far more likely option is that the Packers try their hardest to negotiate a long-term contract with Rodgers’ favorite target. Should they fall short by the early-March deadline, then they’ll place the tag on Adams to avoid losing him to the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders or another wide receiver-hungry team.

Signing Adams to a new contract, as well as bringing back Randall Cobb — another good friend of Rodgers — could increase the likelihood No. 12 comes back for one last run as well. For now, he’s keeping us all waiting.
