Kentucky basketball has been going back and forth with Kansas for quite some time now for a college sports record. The Jayhawks now have the edge thanks to March Madness.

Because Kentucky ran into the March Madness buzzsaw that is Saint Peter’s first, the Wildcats haven’t had a chance to answer the call. While the Wildcats’ history is phenomenal in its own right, Kentucky and Kansas will go back and forth until one falls off the map from a basketball standpoint, and that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Since defeating Kentucky, Saint Peter’s has become the first 15-seed to reach the Elite Eight, and face North Carolina with a trip to the Final Four on the line Sunday. Kansas, meanwhile, could punch its own ticket to the Final Four with a win over Miami.

Kentucky had been college basketball’s all-time winningest program since the 1995-96 championship run, holding the record for 26 years. Over time, Kansas has slowly narrowed the gap.

March Madness: Kentucky basketball relinquishes record

Kansas secured the record after a Sweet 16 win over Providence. Kansas head coach Bill Self didn’t seem to care too much about the record in the moment, despite what it means in the grand scheme of things. It’s tough to blame Self, though, as Kansas is in the middle of a March Madness run. Perhaps it’s something he can reflect on after the season ends.

“I’ll be real candid with you, all that means to me is that we beat Providence,” said Self, who later admitted it could provide a recruiting advantage. “That’s all that means to me.”

Kentucky’s Twitter bio, meanwhile, still has plenty to brag about. But it can no longer say they are the all-time winningest college basketball program.

For now, ‘Official Twitter account for Kentucky men’s basketball. Eight-time NCAA National Champion,’ will do just fine.
