Oscar Mercado spoke after Saturday’s game about New York Yankees fans throwing garbage at Cleveland Guardians outfielders.

Sadly, we have to once again talk about sports fans who do not know how to behave in public.

After the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on a walk-off hit by Gleyber Torres on Apr. 23, fans located in the right field stands pelted the field with garbage. The debris was intended and thrown towards Guardians outfielders.

Following the game, Cleveland outfielder Oscar Mercado spoke to the media and detailed what took place during the ninth inning. You can listen to Mercado’s comments below, courtesy of Bally Sports Cleveland.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Steven Kwan ran into the left field wall and required attention from the team’s training staff. Mercado said that a fan was celebrating Kwan getting injured.

As garbage was being thrown on the field, Mercado threw his glove on the ground and approached the fans in the right field stands. Mercado said that some of the beer cans that were thrown still had beer in them, and one almost hit him in the face, but he caught it. Additionally, Mercado said that Trevor Stephan was hit with an ice cream cone.

In that inning, Myles Straw climbed up the outfield fence to exchange words with fans. Straw initially declined to comment on what took place at Yankee Stadium, but then called Yankees fans “classless” and the “worst fan base on the planet.”

Yankees players, notably Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, walked to right field to implore the fans to stop throwing debris onto the field. Mercado said he appreciated the Yankee players stepping in.

One thing is for certain, the fans who were throwing garbage at Guardians players are going to face a lifetime ban from Yankee Stadium.
