Breaking down the Charles Schwab Challenge with our PGA Tour Expert Picks and best bets for this week at Colonial Country Club.

Fresh off a thrilling PGA Championship, we’re heading back to a normal event with the annual venture to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth for the Charles Schwab Challenge. While it may not be a major championship, this is a strong field at a historically significant event with PGA champion Justin Thomas in the field along with the likes of Will Zalatoris, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland and more.

It was a good week at Southern Hills for our expert picks. We gave out Thomas as one of our three outright winner picks but also hit bets on Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick to finish in the Top 20 (easily). Hideki Matsuyama as a One and Done pick stung as he played extremely poorly by his standards. However, we move on.

These are our PGA Tour expert picks for the Charles Schwab Challenge in addition to more of our best bets for the week at Colonial.

PGA Tour expert picks for Charles Schwab Challenge: Winner, Top 10, One and Done

Pick to Win Charles Schwab Challenge: Davis Riley (+4000)

Want to talk about trending? Here’s what Davis Riley has done in his last four starts: T4 at the Zurich Classic (with Zalatoris), T5 at the Mexico Open, T9 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, and then a sneaky T13 at the PGA Championship.

A rookie on the PGA Tour, Riley is coming into his own before our eyes. He’s gaining over 1.5 strokes tee-to-green per round over his last 12 rounds and has displayed a marvelous short game throughout his young career. I love for him to fully break through and get his first win on the big boy Tour at an event that should set up well for him.

Top 10 pick for the Charles Schwab Challenge: Tommy Fleetwood (+350)

I’m trying to be a bit early on a Tommy Fleetwood break-through as well with my Top 10 pick this week. He showed some good finishes at The Masters and RBC Heritage inside the Top 15, but so much of that success was predicated on his short game. His ball-striking, which was his calling card a couple of years ago, was not great. At the PGA Championship, however, he gained over 6.0 strokes ball-striking on the week. I like for him to build on that and, with some letdowns from fatigue last week, cash a Top 10.

One and Done Pick for the Charles Schwab Challenge: Jordan Spieth

We’ll touch on Spieth more in the best bets portion of the programming, but he’s a lock One and Done pick, particularly for me as I’m not planning n playing him in any of the remaining major championships (even if he is enticing at St. Andrews). His course history at Colonial is absurd and he’s going to cash another big paycheck at this event, which is what you’re looking for.

Jordan Spieth to finish Top 5 (+250)

Admittedly, the number on this one is absolutely terrible for what we need Spieth to accomplish. However, you can’t argue with the history for Spieth at Colonial. He has three second-place finishes, a win in 2016, and two additional Top 10s in the last five years at this place. His putter is a real issue right now, which is why I’m not picking him to win. However, his approach play has been exceptional recently, so thinking he can replicate his past successes here makes a lot of sense.

Viktor Hovland to finish Top 10 (+250)

It was a disappointing PGA Championship for Hovland with three even-par rounds plus a 5-over Saturday for the Norwegian. Colonial should fit his game much better with his elite ball-striking prowess and less emphasis on the short game, which is the most troubling aspect of his game. He’s great at putting himself in good spots off the tee and capitalizes often with irons and wedges. I’m sprinkling on him to win to tail BetSided’s Iain MacMillan, but I love this number for a Top 10 as well.

Brian Harman to finish Top 20 (+200)

There are some courses on the PGA Tour where the lefty, Brian Harman, can’t really contend because he’s just not long enough off the tee. That’s not an issue at this course, though, and his approach play has been trending up in a major way of late, gaining over 1.2 strokes per round over his last 12 rounds in that capacity. He showed out in the final round at Southern Hills and I like for him to ride those feels into Colonial and cash a Top 20 bet.

Longshot pick to win: Doug Ghim (+10000)

Ghim finished 14th at Colonial last year and has quietly been playing pretty enticing golf as of late. He’s been quite accurate off the tee, has gained around 0.55 strokes per round on approach over his last 20 rounds and has three Top 35 finishes in his last four starts. He’s someone to keep an eye on this week as a dark horse.
