Who won the Indy 500? Full results, standings and more
By Mark Powell
A wild Indy 500 came down to a mistake by Scott Dixon, and Swedish racer Marcus Ericsson took advantage.
Ericsson was able to take advantage after Dixon received a speeding penalty as he went to pit row. A yellow flag with six laps to go nearly changed everything for Ericsson, as teammate Jimmie Johnson suffered an accident in his rookie campaign.
There were five accidents on the day, with Johnson’s being the last. However, Ericsson was able to hold on late.

Indy 500 blue flag
The Indy 500 displayed a very rare blue flag, which per the official rulebook “when displayed from the starter’s stand and ordered directly by INDYCAR (command blue), directs a Lapped Car to immediately give way to the overtaking Car.”
Scott Dixon penalty
Dixon was given a speeding penalty, which cost him several seconds in pit row. Dixon lost the lead in the process, and Ericsson took advantage to take the No. 1 spot.
Indy 500 red flag
A red flag signals that the race should stop immediately for the time being, with the order of the drivers staying the same whenever it restarts. With just three laps to go in the 2022 Indy 500, a red flag was drawn after a crash by Jimmie Johnson.
Why do they drink milk after the Indy 500?
Ericsson drank milk and kissed the bricks on Sunday, both of which are IndyCar traditions. Here’s why that’s the case:
The Speedway’s legendary historian Donald Davidson wrote: “As luck would have it, 1956 winner Pat Flaherty suffered from a slight calcium deficiency and regularly drank milk. In addition to a healthy swig of water from the Shaw cup, he consumed an entire bottle of milk and then asked for a second. The water in the Shaw cup was still offered for a couple more years until finally being retired in favour of milk only.”
