8. Express that everything in the post is wrong because you disagree with a part of it

“This thing sucks because I disagree with point 27 of 52.”

At least now we’re getting out of the realm of direct attacks. We’re moving to a better place, and I’m glad we are. However, that doesn’t mean we’re good yet.

I believe we can get there. This is more of an analytical failing than an emotional one, and that’s something easier to address. We all have bits and pieces of articles that stand out to us. Some information shines more brightly. Some takes go a bit harder. Maybe there’s a funny picture of Richard Jefferson eating cake. He would do something like that.

What we need to be careful of is letting that light tint everything else. It might feel like the part you find bad is the only relevant part, but that’s when it helps to take a step back. Consider the whole thing.

One brush stroke doesn’t define a painting. One pixel doesn’t define a Sonic the Hedgehog sprite. It’s everything in concert. Kind of like a concert.

And to be fair, maybe that pixel is out of place and Sonic’s eye looks wonky. Maybe that brings the art down a bit. If that’s your focus, then you’re free to point it out.

I’d just caution against discrediting the whole thing when there might be good points elsewhere. Being able to pull out the good information away from the bad information is a valuable skill. And it’s one that takes practice. Who knew NBA Power Rankings could be intellectual training? Probably you, because you’re smart.
