Seahawks extend DK Metcalf with historic deal

The Seattle Seahawks ended the contract dispute with DK Metcalf by making him one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.

DK Metcalf didn’t practice in the opening days of Seahawks training camp while pursuing a lucrative new contract.

Seattle just made sure he won’t be sitting out of camp any longer. Now he’s sitting pretty with a brand new three-year contract extension.

The deal is worth $72 million over three years and includes a $30-million signing bonus, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Metcalf will get $58.2 million guaranteed while hitting the free agent market again at 27 years old, giving him another opportunity to cash in big.

The Seahawks drafted Metcalf out of Ole Miss in 2019 in the second round. He’s paid off big time for them with 3,170 yards and 29 touchdowns in three seasons. His 12 receiving touchdowns in 2021 were the fourth-most in the league. He was a Pro-Bowler in 2020 and is filled with enough potential to add to his tally of those.

If Seattle hadn’t given Metcalf this new deal, he likely would have walked for nothing after the 2022 season. Securing his services for the next three years gives the team one less thing to worry about on offense.

The toughest thing to figure out is who will be throwing passes Metcalf’s way now that Russell Wilson is gone. It could be Drew Lock or Geno Smith in 2022, or even Jimmy Garappolo depending on how the 49ers proceed with their on-the-outs QB. Either way, the signal caller in Seattle will be able to rely on one of the most physically gifted receivers in the league.

If the Seahawks opt to draft a quarterback in the first round of next year’s draft, it’ll go a long way to have Metcalf waiting to support them.
