Mets: 3 roster moves keeping New York from World Series contention
2) Call up Mark Vientos or Brett Baty
The Mets have also struggled at third base as Eduardo Escobar has been a disappointment at the plate and defensively. He’s hitting .220/.273/.390 with an OPS+ of 85. He also has -9 DRS and -5 OAA, both of which are among the worst in the sport. He could be out for a bit since during Friday’s game, he suffered a side injury. The club looks like they could turn to Gosuke Katoh if Escobar is injured but they should turn to Mark Vientos or Brett Baty.
Vientos, 22, is the club’s No. 6 overall prospect and he has spent the entire season at the Triple-A level. In 79 games, he has hit .267/.351/.517 with 19 home runs, 56 RBI, and 13 doubles. He also spent part of last season in Triple-A as well so he’s ready to get a look in the majors. He can also play first base or left field as well so he could provide them with some versatility.
Baty, 22, has split the season between Double-A and Triple-A as he was just recently called up to Triple-A (four games). However, the Mets’ No. 2 prospect was hitting .312/.406/.544 with 19 home runs, 59 RBI, and 22 doubles in 89 games. He already has five hits in his four Triple-A games. He’s MLB’s no. 18 overall prospect.
Considering that Escobar has struggled and may be injured, the Mets need to use of them (likely Vientos since he has been in Triple-A the longest) to replace Escobar regardless.
