College football rankings: 5 biggest questions still lingering about Top 25 teams
By John Buhler
2. Is J.J. McCarthy the guy to lead Michigan Wolverines to the promised land?
Even though Michigan has an incredibly weak non-conference schedule, the Wolverines have looked fantastic thus far through two games. Assuming they have no issues with UConn, Michigan will be a solid 3-0 before commencing Big Ten play. A lot of what made last year’s team is still here, but we have to wonder if second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy can get them over the top.
With Penn State and Michigan State at home this year, Michigan will be favored in all of its games up until the Thanksgiving Weekend spectacular in Columbus. Even if Jim Harbaugh decided to keep going with Cade McNamara over McCarthy, Michigan stands a great chance at being 11-0 prior to the Ohio State game. However, we have to wonder if McCarthy can go toe-to-toe with C.J. Stroud…
If Harbaugh plays his cards right, Michigan can repeat in the Big Ten, and possibly win the playoff.
1. Are Clemson Tigers good enough at quarterback to win ACC and make playoff?
The Clemson Tigers oddly find themselves in a similar predicament as Michigan. They have an incumbent starting quarterback who is kind of okay in D.J. Uiagalelei but have someone promising sitting on the bench in Cade Klubnik. While there are no guarantees either blue-blood program will win its division this season, Clemson might have the harder time of the two in potentially doing so.
While the Tigers should get to 3-0 with a win over Louisiana Tech this weekend, they have to play at Wake Forest and vs. NC State back-to-back immediately afterward. Clemson looks to be at a quarterbacking disadvantage with Uiagalelei going up against Demon Deacons star Sam Hartman and the leader of the Wolfpack in one Devin Leary. They can drop one game, but not both of them.
Clemson’s season might be decided before we even really get into October, for good, bad or ugly.
