When was the last time Arkansas beat Alabama? [Updated 2022]

After losing the Southwest Classic to rival Texas A&M, No. 20 Arkansas has nothing left to lose when No. 2 Alabama comes to town this weekend.

Although they play annually in the SEC West, it has been a minute since the Razorbacks have beaten the Crimson Tide in a game of football. That is not to say the Hogs have been utterly putrid on the gridiron of late, but Nick Saban has dominated most opponents in SEC play since the latter days of the George W. Bush administration. So how long has it been since the Razorbacks have beaten the Crimson Tide on the football field?

When was the last time Arkansas beat Alabama?

Believe it or not, the last time the Hogs beat the Tide in SEC play, Saban was still coaching the Miami Dolphins. Yes, Mike Shula beat Houston Nutt way back in 2006 24-23 in Fayetteville. Mitch Mustain defeated John Parker Wilson in overtime to hand the Crimson Tide their first loss of the season. This would be the last year Shula coached at his alma mater. Nutt later left for Ole Miss.

Alabama vs. Arkansas rivalry history

Entering Saturday’s Week 5 matchup, Alabama holds a 22-8 record over Arkansas. However, two of Alabama’s wins over the Hogs (2005, 2007) have been vacated. Also, a 1993 victory over the Razorbacks was later forfeited by the Crimson Tide. While these teams have played close games since becoming division rivals with Arkansas’ SEC entry in 1992, the Hogs usually come up short.

To date, Arkansas has only beaten Alabama by double digits twice. The 1998 Hogs crushed Mike DuBose’s team 42-6 in Nutt’s first year in Fayetteville. Nutt also beat Shula in 2004, 27-10. While Alabama was a totally different program between Gene Stallings’ demise and Saban’s accession, Arkansas was really humming during Nutt’s time in Fayetteville. Eventually, they will win again…

Whenever the Hogs do finally beat the Crimson Tide, it will be a massive deal in college football.
