Oklahoma must stop the bleeding against upstart, banged-up Kansas
By John Buhler
Saturday at home vs. a banged-up Kansas team is an ideal time for Oklahoma to win a game.
It might already be season over in Norman, but Saturday afternoon is a perfect time for Oklahoma to get its first conference win under head coach Brent Venables vs. a banged-up Kansas squad.
Although Kansas played OU tough last season, and Lance Leipold may have the big advantage at head coach, the Jayhawks are coming off a tough first loss on the season to TCU. ESPN’s College GameDay was in Lawrence and the Jayhawks suffered a major injury to its star quarterback Jalon Daniels. This game is in Norman, so the Sooners have no excuses not to win this conference game.
Thus far, the Sooners are 0-3 in Big 12 play under Venables with a home loss to Kansas State, a road blowout at TCU and the worst shutout loss in school history at Red River vs. arch-rival Texas.
Oklahoma has a perfect opportunity to get right at home vs. Kansas on Saturday
Look. Let’s be real. The only thing that matters for OU football this year is keeping the bowl streak alive. Not just to keep it alive for the sake of keeping it alive, but for Venables and his staff to have those crucial bowl practices, you know, to get better as a football team! For OU to go bowling, the Sooners have to go 3-3 in their last six games. They have will have a chance, but it won’t be easy.
Because Oklahoma is not likely to win Bedlam in November, even if it is at home, the Sooners need to find three other Big 12 games where wins can be had on their schedule. Kansas was a much tougher opponent this time a week ago. As far as at Iowa State, home vs. Baylor, at West Virginia and at Texas Tech, surely, a great program like Oklahoma can split the pair and go 2-2?
In short, a win at home over Kansas will serve as a bit of a reset for the OU program after last week’s disaster in Dallas. Oklahoma would be 4-3 and with a great opportunity to get to 6-6, or even 7-5. However, a loss to Kansas will have Sooners everywhere in full-blown panic mode. They cannot begin Big 12 play with an 0-4 mark under Venables. That would be very John Blake-like…
Saturday is a great opportunity for Oklahoma to get back to playing Oklahoma football in Norman.
