Matt Rhule is already out of a job, but he is well-equipped to rebuild a program
Now that he is out of a job, Matt Rhule will almost certainly be taking over a Power Five program of note in 2023. The former Carolina Panthers head coach was never cut out for the NFL. It is understandable why he took that money from David Tepper to leave Baylor. However, that was probably the worst thing he did in his coaching career. For now, he must reinvent with a rebuild.
Rhule’s previous successes at Baylor and Temple before that would make hit a top candidate for any of these openings. What makes the Auburn job interesting is that while it is a major step up from Baylor and absolutely up from Temple, how will Rhule recruit? It may serve him to go to a Big Ten/Big 12/Pac-12 school. Then again, he would be rewarded handsomely by winning in the SEC.
Rhule is going to have his pick of jobs, but it remains to be seen if he will prioritize the Auburn gig.
Believe it or not, Urban Meyer is exactly what Auburn needs for a head coach
Hear me out. Urban Meyer may be persona non grata in the football world, but what price will Auburn put on being great again? Oh, he will bail on you in an instant, abruptly retire and leave a mess in the process, but that feels especially Auburn. We are here for a good time, not for a long time. If Meyer took over at Auburn, the Tigers would win the SEC at least twice in eight years or so.
More importantly, he would instill fear in Nick Saban and Kirby Smart. It would be like getting a better head coach than Brian Kelly at LSU in the SEC West. Recruiting, coaching staff, preparation, execution, all would be in favor of Auburn. Keep in mind that Bruce Pearl had some dirt on him that needed some polishing when he came to Auburn. Look at how good the basketball team is now…
If Auburn wants to take a home-run cut and put the college football world on notice, hire Meyer.
