Texas football racked up penalties and turnovers as they lost to Oklahoma State, opening up the floodgates of criticism for Quinn Ewers and Steve Sarkisian.
Maybe Texas spent too much team reading their own headlines this week. Maybe Oklahoma State just has the Longhornsā number. Either way, Saturday was equal parts disappointing and embarrassing for Steve Sarkisianās team.
Texas led No. 11 Oklahoma State by 31-17 late in the second quarter. They let the Cowboys outscore them 24-3 in the final three minutes of the first half and the entire second half.
The college football media watching the game had a lot of things to say about how it all went down.

13 penalties on Texas and zero on Oklahoma State?

Cue Texas fans claiming the Big 12 refs had it in for them since theyāre leaving for the SEC.
Iād probably say the same thing 13-0 lol
Texas deserved to lose, played sloppy, was lifeless on offense in the second half.

But to have a football game where one football team has 13 penalties and the other has 0 is embarrassing for the Big 12.
I would like to remind everyone that immediately before Oklahoma State took the lead, Dave Pasch and Dusty Dvoracek were non-ironically arguing Texas had a legitimate shot at the playoff

The way the Longhorns picked up penalties, ending with 14 for 119 yards, was frustrating.
Watching Quinn Ewers complete just 38 percent of his passes and throw three interceptions was even worse.
Twitter had no interest in letting Ewers off the hook for his performance.
Yāall crowned Quinn Ewers way too early.

Quinn Ewers' 14 overthrows is the most by a Texas QB in the last 10 seasons.
ā Alex Loeb (@SpanningTheLoeb) October 22, 2022
Quinn Ewers is one of only 3 QBs since 2000 to attempt 49+ passes in a game and complete less than 20, per @collegefb_ref.

Pretty appropriate end to the game. Unfair to blame the loss on Ewers entirely but manā¦he was bad today.
ā Gabe Ikard (@GabeIkard) October 22, 2022
Texas took a beating on the field and on social media, especially since so much of the narrative around the Longhorns was that they wouldnāt have suffered their first two losses if Quinn Ewers had been healthy. Recent performances havenāt backed that up.

They told me Texas was a Top 10 team and could make the playoffs

Sarkisian is now getting some less-than-desirable comparisons to his predecessor Tom Herman.
Tom Herman coached 50 games for Texas and had 4 losses after leading at the half.

Sark has coached 20 games for Texas so far and already has 6 losses after leading at the half. #TEXvsOSU
Steve āScott Frostā Sarkisian is now 10-10 as Texas HC. 8 of his losses are by 1 score.

Double digit second half lead gone. This is such a concerning theme under Sark.

The āalmostā against Alabama can only ease Sarkās hot seat for so long. Texas still looks a long way from contending for the Big 12, let alone the College Football Playoff.
While the Longhorns have to go back to the drawing board, Oklahoma State just improved their chances of contending by bouncing back after their close loss to TCU last week.
