Potential Packers trade target just hit trade block, and it’s not Chase Claypool
By Josh Wilson
Chase Claypool has been the talk of the town for the Green Bay Packers. Another possible target just hit the trade block on Sunday morning.
The Green Bay Packers need some receiving help, that much is clear. It’s been clear since before the season began, yet the Packers seem mighty content with what they have now.
They also seem intent on forcing the pass. Despite having Aaron Jones on their roster, they continue to throw the ball. In key situations, that has led to their misfortune.
All of that points to the Packers trading for a wide receiver before the trade deadline. So far, Chase Claypool has been the main target out there on the trade market — though free agent Odell Beckham Jr. is on the minds of fans as well, but also will have many suitors — but he will have several suitors, so the Packers need to consider other options, too.
On Sunday, one option came up alongside Claypool that Green Bay should definitely consider.
Brandin Cooks is on the trade block
On Sunday morning, Ian Rapoport reported that Texans receiver Brandin Cooks has been the target of multiple calls. He simultaneously reported that Claypool is not expected to be dealt at this time, which means teams like the Packers will need to shift focus to available targets.
Cooks this season has been Houston’s top receiver, catching 24 balls for 235 yards. He’s averaging 9.8 yards per reception. Cooks is certainly still the No. 1 receiver, but he’s losing ground fast in that regard to Nico Collins. As Houston gets the younger Collins more targets and opportunity to speed up his development, it may make Cooks expendable. Green Bay could use his veteran ability.
Cooks, just 5-foot-10, would join a Packers receiving core that has to be among the shorter in the league. Amari Rodgers, Randall Cobb, and Sammy Watkins are all 6-foot-1 or shorter.
Lastly, Rapoport mentioned Jerry Jeudy has been brought up in trade calls as well, another receiver the Packers could target.
