Drake Maye is the best QB in college football whether you’re ready to admit it or not
By Scott Rogust
It is time that college football fans pay more attention to North Carolina freshman quarterback Drake Maye.
As college football enters Week 10, the Heisman conversation is focused on quarterbacks C.J. Stroud of Ohio State and Hendon Hooker of the Tennessee Volunteers. The two signal callers are on two undefeated football teams looking to make the College Football Playoff, after all.
But when it comes to a quarterback that is truly under the radar, that is North Carolina’s Drake Maye. After Sam Howell declared for the NFL Draft and was selected by the Washington Commanders, the freshman got the starting job this year, and he has been truly impressive.
This past Saturday against the Pittsburgh Panthers, Maye threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns while completing 34-of-44 pass attempts in North Carolina’s 42-24 win. He also ran for 61 yards on 14 carries.
With this latest performance, Maye has statistics that show he is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation.
Drake Maye proving he’s the best quarterback in the nation
As the ACC Network’s tweet above shows, Maye actually leads Stroud and Alabama’s Bryce Young in total touchdowns and total yards per game. But wait, there is more.
Maye is also the first quarterback in Tar Heels history to have five consecutive games with over 300 yards passing.
There is perhaps a statistic that is even more impressive than the ones shown above. Maye is now the third quarterback in FBS history to average 300 yards per game and leads the team in rushing. The only other quarterbacks to do this were Johnny Manziel and Patrick Mahomes. That stat comes courtesy of ACC Network.
On the year, Maye completed 71.3 percent of his passes for 2,671 yards and 29 touchdowns, while throwing just three interceptions on the year. Maye also recorded 439 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 98 carries.
Maye has the chance to make it six games in a row with over 300 passing yards, as the Tar Heels take on the Virginia Cavaliers.
