The latest on Packers trade deadline: Every rumor, trade [UPDATED]
By Josh Wilson
Here’s the latest on the Packers quest for a wide receiver at the NFL trade deadline.
The Green Bay Packers have had a horrible season so far relative to expectations. Anytime you roster two-time MVP Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback, the expectation is to compete.
Instead, the Packers sit at 3-5, the same exact record as the Chicago Bears. If it weren’t for the horrific Detroit Lions, they’d be at the bottom of their division.
The Packers still have a chance to turn things around because the NFC is a dumpster fire from nearly top-to-bottom, with the Philadelphia Eagles standing out as the only definitively great team.
It’ll take some moves to get better, though, in addition to a more logical set of play calls (players are frustrated about the play calls, too). Why isn’t Aaron Jones running the ball? The Pro Bowler finally got 20 carries against Buffalo this past week, but in the previous two games before it he was limited to nine and eight carries respectively.
Much has been made about the Packers need for a bolstered receiving corps. The Packers lost Davante Adams this offseason, and never really backfilled his role. They replaced him with a committee of so-so receivers which have proved to be not great. The Packers are second-worst in the NFL in passes dropped with 15. Yet they continue to not run the ball.
They could consider these names:
- Chase Claypool, Steelers
- Jerry Jeudy, Broncos
- Brandin Cooks, Texans
- Odell Beckham Jr., free agent (not trade deadline related)
It doesn’t make sense, but if they’re that bullish on the passing game, they need more talent.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Packers’ trade deadline moves. We’ll have this page updated throughout the day with every rumor and confirmed trade, so bookmark it and check back in.
The trade deadline is on Tuesday at 4 PM ET, 3 PM in Green Bay.
Trade deadline has passed. The Green Bay Packers made no moves.
The Packers were a sure thing for Chase Claypool. Then their rivals, the Bears, swooped him up.
The Packers did nothing. They didn’t even get Brandin Cooks. It’s a bad look.
Today – Packers GM Brian Gutekunst is on board with making a trade
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is on board with making a trade but said the team wouldn’t convert on a “silly” deal, and wanted the right opportunity. This echoes comments from Rodgers earlier this month, as stated below.
Saturday – Packers have legit interest in adding a receiver
According to Bill Huber of SI, the Packers have real interest in adding a receiver.
"“According to two sources, the expectation is the Packers will indeed acquire a receiver in the next few days. Perhaps, if demand outpaces supply, the asking price will be too steep. Perhaps the Packers will get crushed by the Bills and Gutekunst will like the vibe surrounding the team even less than the outcome. But the feeling is the Packers will be buyers at the trade deadline and receiver is the position.”"
Saturday – The Packers are one of several teams in the mix for WR Brandin Cooks
Brandin Cooks appears available via the Houston Texans, but a number of NFC teams would like to acquire his services.
Earlier this month – Aaron Rodgers expects the team to make a trade
Aaron Rodgers thinks the Packers will pursue deals if they make sense, according to Madison.com.
