College Football Playoff selection committee explains ranking Alabama over TCU
By Scott Rogust
College Football Playoff selection committee chair Boo Corrigan revealed why they decided to rank the Alabama Crimson Tide over the TCU Horned Frogs.
On Tuesday night, the very first College Football Playoff rankings for the 2022 season have been revealed. Whenever a ranking is unveiled, there is instantly a debate as to whether they made the right choice.
While there were some eye-opening decisions, such as Georgia being ranked No. 3, and Michigan being placed just outside of the Playoff as the fifth-ranked team, no decision was more shocking than Alabama being ranked No. 6 over the TCU Horned Frogs. It is important to note that the Horned Frogs are undefeated on the season, while Alabama has one loss to its record.
After the rankings reveal, chair of the CFP selection committee Boo Corrigan revealed the reason as to why they had ranked Alabama over TCU. Corrigan said that they are “looking for a balanced team on offense and defense” in regards to TCU, while pointing out Alabama’s wins over Mississippi State, Arkansas, and Texas, in addition to their close loss to Tennessee.

Boo Corrigan on why the College Football Playoff committee ranked Alabama over TCU
In regards to Alabama’s wins that Corrigan cites, Alabama held on to defeat Texas 20-19, overcame an injury to quarterback Bryce Young to beat Arkansas, and handily won 30-6 over Mississippi State. As for the Tennessee loss, Alabama missed a potential game-winning field goal, and Tennessee capitalized to get the 52-49 win.
TCU had four wins over ranked teams so far this season. They did have a 55-24 blowout win over the Oklahoma Sooners, a 38-31 win over the Kansas Jayhawks, a 43-40 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, and a 38-28 victory over the Kansas State Jayhawks.
There is less than a month remaining in the regular season, so there is always time for the rankings to change. TCU does have the chance to leap over Alabama, especially if they win out, including a conference title win, and the Crimson Tide lose a game down the stretch. That could happen as soon as Week 10 if Alabama were to lose to the No. 10 LSU Tigers.
