Updated college football rankings after Georgia dismantles Tennessee
Tennessee came in at No. 1 in the first college football rankings for the CFP but Georgia completely dominated the Vols, which will cause a big shake-up.
All eyes in the college football world were on Athens come Saturday afternoon, especially after the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season installed the Tennessee Volunteers as the No. 1 team in the first CFP poll of the season. And that set the stage for the unbeaten Vols to visit the also-undefeated and No. 3-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
That’s why they play the games, though. Kirby Smart’s team came out a bit sloppy immediately with Stetson Bennett IV handing it off and failing to recover the ensuing fumble on the first drive but the defense stopped Tennessee immediately and limited the Vols to only a field goal. And from there, it was just total domination in favor of Georgia.
Bennett led a long drive on the next series and ran it in himself. Georgia then came up with a big stop (that really should’ve been a safety) and then took the first play on that drive 37 yards to the house on a pass from Bennett to Ladd McConkey.
UGA went into halftime up 24-6 and then just turned on the cruise control with their defense completely stifling one of the most potent offenses in the country. Tennessee got a late touchdown to not be blanked in that department but it was a dominant 27-13 win for Georgia that set the tone for the rest of the season.
Updated college football rankings: CFP rankings after Georgia beats Tennessee
After this huge result, here’s what the new Top 10 in the college football rankings should look like.
- Georgia Bulldogs
- Ohio State Buckeyes
- Clemson Tigers
- Michigan Wolverines
- Tennessee Volunteers
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- TCU Horned Frogs
- Oregon Ducks
- USC Trojans
- LSU Tigers
Note: Rankings are prior to Alabama vs LSU and Clemson vs Notre Dame on Saturday night.
There’s simply no way that Georgia isn’t the top-ranked team in the new college football rankings whenever the CFP selection committee meets this week.
While the Bulldogs have had some head-scratching games, the fact of the matter is that they are now 9-0 with two dominant wins over Top 10 teams in the country (UT and Oregon) in which they completely shut down two of the better offenses in college football.
As for Tennessee, getting beat in that manner with five other undefeated teams still left out there, they are going to fall out of the Top 4. And with the loss in Athens, they might’ve played their way out of the College Football Playoff given that they won’t likely have the SEC Championship Game now to pick up another big signature win.
