Stetson Bennett’s TD celebration was actually a troll towards Tennessee fans
Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett trolled Tennessee fans who leaked his phone number by miming a phone to celebrate his first touchdown.
When Stetson Bennett scored the opening touchdown of Saturday’s epic matchup between No. 3 Georgia and No. 1 Tennessee, he brought his hand to his ear in the universal symbol for “call me.”
What was the reasoning behind that celebration?
According to rumors on Twitter, Bennett had his phone number leaked to Tennessee fans ahead of the game. They inundated him with phone calls meant to disrupt the quarterback. He used his moment of triumph to make fun of them.
Stetson Bennett’s TD celebration appeared to reference leaked phone number
Clearly, the overnight phone calls didn’t do much to unsettle Bennett, who got the biggest of last laughs by scoring that TD.
If that truly was the reasoning behind the celebration, it’s an all-timer.
That’s not to say there aren’t other potential explanations. Bennett was well-known for using a flip phone last year during Georgia’s national title run. So if the rumor about a leaked phone number isn’t true, then maybe he was just poking fun at that.
Bennett put on a show in the first half against the Volunteers. He recovered from an early fumble to lead three Georgia touchdown drives as the Bulldogs took a 21-3 lead.
His first touchdown was a 13-yard rush. His second was a picture-perfect 37-yard touchdown pass to Ladd McConkey on the first offensive play after a questionable review denied Georgia a safety. His third opened up the second quarter from five yards out.
Bennett has never lost to Tennessee in his Georgia career. He beat them directly as a starter in 2020 and 2021. The last time the Bulldogs lost to the Volunteers was in 2016 before he enrolled.
