CFP chairman reveals what has Ohio State ranked ahead of Michigan
By Scott Rogust
College Football Playoff selection committee chair Boo Corrigan revealed the exact reason why they ranked Ohio State over Michigan.
The top four spots in the College Football Playoff rankings once again remain with the undefeated teams. On Tuesday night, there were no changes in the top four, as Georgia received the No. 1 spot, followed by Ohio State, Michigan, and TCU in that exact order.
Since Ohio State and Michigan hold identical 10-0 records, some Wolverines fans may be wondering why they are not ranked ahead of the Buckeyes.
During a press conference with reporters, CFP selection committee chair Boo Corrigan cited Ohio State’s season-opening win over Notre Dame, who was ranked as the fifth-best team in the nation at the time.
CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan reveals why they ranked Ohio State ahead of Michigan
“Two well-balanced teams, both in the top 10 offensively and defensively,” said Corrigan, h/t 247 Sports. Ohio State does have the win over Notre Dame, which I believe at this point as a committee, as we talk about it, that stands out a little bit to us as we’re going through this.
“But again, two really good teams that play really hard. Both had good wins this past week over Indiana and Nebraska. There’s a reason one is No. 2 and one is No. 3 in how close they are.”
Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 21-10 in their first game of the season, overcoming a 10-7 deficit at halftime after a touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud to wide receiver Xavier Johnson in the third quarter and a two-yard touchdown run by Miyan Williams in the fourth.
Notre Dame was one of Ohio State’s three non-conference opponents scheduled this season, and they were ranked. As for Michigan, they faced off against three non-conference teams, but they were against Colorado State, Hawai’i, and UConn, all of whom were unranked. The Wolverines outscored their opponents 166-17.
Ultimately, what will matter is whoever stands tall when these two teams meet in the regular-season finale. Not only will the winner receive bragging rights, but they will also earn a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game representing the East Division. That will be the ultimate decider as to who should truly be ranked higher than the other in the CFP rankings.
Michigan will take on Illinois in Week 12, while Ohio State faces Maryland.
