Ohio State tight end Gee Scott Jr. let his emotions get the best of him in The Game as he cost the Buckeyes dearly by headbutting a Michigan player.

One thing that the Ohio State Buckeyes are not accustomed to is trailing late in games. While Ryan Day’s team has struggled at times and fallen behind in the first half, they were 11-0 entering their rivalry matchup against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday because they always seemed to pull away in the final 30 minutes of action.

The Game has a way of making emotions run hotter than ever before and of putting pressure unlike anything many players have experienced before, however. And that was evident in the second half for the Buckeyes.

J.J. McCarthy’s third long touchdown pass of the game put Michigan ahead 24-20 and Ohio State was searching for any kind of answer. But after a play in which a first down was called back due to a holding penalty, tight end Gee Scott made things even worse by losing his temper.

Running off the sidelines with the Wolverines defender who was covering him, Scott immediately ran over and got in his opponent’s face before delivering an obvious and unprovoked headbutt that cost OSU another 15 yards for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

It’s one thing for tempers to flare in a game so rife with history and emotion like Ohio State-Michigan. But you have to keep your composure or it can cost your team everything.

Though the ending isn’t written yet, that looks as if it might be the case here. That penalty from Scott because of a selfish and boneheaded decision put the Buckeyes in a first-and-35 situation that they were unable to convert and had to punt the ball back to the Wolverines and giving them the opportunity to add to their lead.

If Ohio State indeed does lose for the second straight year to Michigan, Scott will have to be one of the scapegoats for this headbutt.
