Alabama hasn’t reached the levels they wanted in 2022 but they can remind people what a Nick Saban team looks like in the bowl game.

There is still an outside chance Alabama could sneak into the College Football Playoff, though it would take an extreme set of circumstances to clear the way.

The Crimson Tide suffered two losses during the regular season with the loss to LSU in early November spoiling their season. That was the defeat that kept them out of the SEC Championship Game. A conference title game appearance would have given Bryce Young and company the chance to play their way in. Instead, they’re on the outside looking in.

The playoff hopes will remain until the bitter end, but we’ve got a good idea where the Tide will land.

Alabama bowl projections: Crimson Tide expected to play in Sugar Bowl

Alabama has a strong chance of playing in the Sugar Bowl this year since Georgia is such a heavy favorite over LSU in the SEC Championship Game.

Normally, the Sugar Bowl would host the SEC champ but with the presumptive champ going to the playoff, the next best SEC team will head to New Orleans.

Of course, LSU could beat Georgia and throw everything for a loop. The Tigers would either go to the playoff in that instance or take the Sugar Bowl spot themselves. That could drop Alabama into the Cotton Bowl ahead of Tennessee, who would likely land in the Citrus Bowl instead.

Recent Sugar Bowl history

2022: (7) Baylor 21, (8) Ole Miss 7
2021: (3) Ohio State 49, (2) Clemson 28
2020: (5) Georgia 26, (8) Baylor 14
2019: (14) Texas 28, (6) Georgia 21
2018: (4) Alabama 24, (1) Clemson 6

The Sugar Bowl hosted College Football Playoff semifinals in 2021 and 2018 with Ohio State and Alabama both upsetting the higher seed.

Obviously, the Crimson Tide would rather be involved in the playoff this year, but they have a strong history in the Suger Bowl even without the CFP. Alabama is 9-7 with the most wins and appearances of any team.
