Everything Kirby Smart said after Georgia’s SEC Championship win
By Scott Rogust
The Georgia Bulldogs are the SEC champions for the first time since 2017. Here’s everything that head coach Kirby Smart said after the victory.
Last year, the Georgia Bulldogs won the College Football Playoff national championship by defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide. While they accomplished this feat, they didn’t win the SEC championship, as Alabama did so last year. They had the chance to win their first conference title since 2017 with a win over the LSU Tigers on Saturday.
The Bulldogs used a strong start in the first half to carry them to a 50-30 victory over the Tigers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
Here’s everything head coach Kirby Smart had to say after the victory.
Everything Kirby Smart said after Georgia wins SEC championship
When speaking with the media at the podium, Smart talked about the team’s plan for a “connected assault” in the SEC Championship Game. He then praised quarterback Stetson Bennett and defensive back Christopher Smith II, who were sitting at the podium. The quotes below come courtesy of Jordan D. Hill of Dawgs247.
Bennett had a great showing on Saturday, as he completed all but six passes on 29 attempts for 274 yards and four touchdowns. It certainly helped that Bennett wasn’t sacked by LSU for the entire game.
Smith, meanwhile, had a heads up play to get Georgia on the board early in the game after recovering a blocked field goal attempt by LSU and returned it 96-yards for a touchdown. Additionally, Smith recorded three solo tackles, one tackle for loss, and one interception.
Smart also offered praise to defensive tackle and perennial top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft Jalen Carter. While Carter did pick up four total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and one pass defended, he caught the attention of the internet for lifting LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels up with one arm.
In regards to the lift and the raising of Carter’s raising of the index finger, Smart praised his “great discipline” for not going bringing Daniels to the ground.
With this win, a College Football Playoff berth is 100 percent secured for Georgia. There’s no drama entering the CFP selection show on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET. Smart said that Georgia will look to improve “everything” as they await to find out which New Year’s Six game they’ll play in.
The Bulldogs now wait to see who they will be facing in the Playoff until the Dec. 31 game. Until then, they will celebrate their first conference championship since 2017.
