Has TCU ever had a Heisman Trophy winner?
By Scott Rogust
TCU quarterback Max Duggan is a finalist for the 2022 Heisman trophy. Has there ever been a Horned Frogs player to win the award?
The TCU Horned Frogs were one of the biggest surprise teams in the 2022 college football season. They carried a perfect 12-0 record into the Big 12 Championship Game against Kansas State, but fell just short. Even so, they clinched the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, their first appearance ever. In fact, they’re the first Texas school to make it into the Playoff.
Plenty of credit can be given to quarterback Max Duggan for their success. After throwing for 3,321 yards and 30 touchdowns in 13 games, Duggan was named one of four finalists for the 2022 Heisman trophy.
There may be some wondering if there has ever been a TCU player to win the Heisman. We have the answer for you.
Has a TCU player ever won the Heisman Trophy?
There has only been one Horned Frogs player to ever win the Heisman, and that’s Davey O’Brien.
In the 1938 season, O’Brien did a bit of everything. As a quarterback, O’Brien completed 93-of-167 pass attempts for 1,509 yards, 19 touchdowns, and four interceptions. He ran for 466 yards and three touchdowns on 127 carries. Then, on defense, O’Brien hauled in six interceptions.
After winning the Heisman, O’Brien was selected fourth overall by the Philadelphia Eagles
The last player to be a finalist for the Heisman is running back LaDainian Tomlinson. In the 2000 season, Tomlinson ran for 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns on 369 carries. Tomlinson didn’t win the Heisman, as he finished fourth in voting. Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke won the Heisman, narrowly beating Oklahoma quarterback Josh Heupel.
