The Black Knights are victorious after they beat the Midshipmen in the first-ever Army-Navy game to reach overtime.

The Army Black Knights and Navy Midshipmen have faced off 122 total times prior to Saturday. But the 123rd edition of the game provided something that football fans have never seen between these two teams — overtime.

Both Army and Navy needed an additional overtime to determine a winner after both scored touchdowns on their opening plays. But after a goal-line fumble by fullback Anton Hall Jr., Army kicker Quinn Maretzki nailed a 39-yard field goal to give the Black Knights the 20-17 victory.

The game featured the jubilation of Army winning and earning the right to sing second, while Navy was devastated after the loss, which was shown with Hall covering his eyes and collapsing on the sidelines

College football media reacts to Army beating Navy in overtime

Here are some of the reactions from those in college football media on Twitter:

Navy had led Army 10-7 since near the end of the third quarter on a 77-yard run by Hall. With a little under two minutes remaining in regulation, the Black Knights were able to tie things up on a 37-yard field goal by Maretzki.

Once overtime began, both teams needed just one play to get on the scoreboard. After receiving possession first, Army cashed in on a touchdown after one play, a 25-yard touchdown run by Markel Johnson. Then, Navy responded one play later, as quarterback Xavier Arline connected with wide receiver Marquel Haywood for a walk-in touchdown. That was actually Navy’s first completed pass of the entire game.

Navy orchestrated a seven-play drive in double overtime and looked poised to reach the end zone. But, Hall had the football knocked out by defensive lineman Austin Hill and was recovered by fellow lineman Darius Richardson. Army then capitalized on the turnover in the form of Maretzki’s game-winning field goal.

This game meant a lot to the players on the field, as evidenced by the differences in reactions on the opposing sidelines. But, after losing in 2021, Army is back in the win column and hold the bragging rights for winning the first-ever overtime game between both teams.
