Who was the last Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State? The Buckeyes have had five finalists in the last five years but no winners in a decade.

C.J. Stroud got his invite to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony again this year. The quarterback was a finalist in 2021 after his first season as a starter. He remained one of the top playmakers in college football in 2022.

The Buckeyes are no stranger to Heisman finalists. Stroud is just the latest in a recent explosion of finalists for the program. Justin Fields and Chase Young were in New York in 2019. Dwayne Haskins was there in 2018.

However, Ohio State is still waiting for their seventh Heisman winner and eighth trophy.

Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2006, besting Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn to the award. The voting wasn’t close. He had 2540 points to 878 for McFadden.

Smith’s efforts took the Buckeyes to the BCS National Championship Game, though they fell short against Florida. His ability to evade pressure made him a nuisance for defenses while his ability to find receivers on the end of those plays gave him the easy Heisman win.

He was the sixth Buckeye to win the award, but his trophy was the seventh for the program because Archie Griffin won it twice in 1974 and 1975.

Along with Smith and Griffin, Ohio State’s other Heisman winners include RB Eddie Georgia in 1995, RB Howard Cassady in 1955, RB Vic Janowicz in 1950 and HB Les Horvath in 1944.

Despite being one of college football’s most successful programs of the century, the Buckeyes have only produced one Heisman winner. Stroud, of course, is trying to change that.
