Ohio State football recruiting needed a big Early Signing Day from head coach Ryan Day to keep adding elite talent for the Buckeyes.

While Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes are preparing for another College Football Playoff appearance, they are also looking to keep the train rolling in Columbus on Early Signing Day.

After landing a nice 4-star commitment on Wednesday with the Early Signing Period coming to a close, the Buckeyes are up to the No. 6 class in the 2023 recruiting rankings. However, it’s not been a terrific Dec. 21 for the program nor has it been ideal leading up to the day as well. Regardless, they are still sitting with one 5-star in the class (WR Brandon Inniss) and have three Top 100 wide receivers committed overall.

So let’s check in with the Ohio State football recruiting and all of the updates from Early Signing Day.

Ohio State Early Signing Day rumors: Targets, potential commits on Dec. 21

It’s not figuring to be an eventual Early Signing Day for the Buckeyes on Wednesday. They have been in the mix for several 5-stars like DL James Smith, EDGE Qua Russaw, and EDGE Damon Wilson, the top uncommitted recruit in the 2023 class. However, the latest predictions indicate that none of those are going to end up in Columbus.

Wednesday, Dec. 21 (1:05 p.m. ET) – 4-star CB Kayin Lee flips from Ohio State to Auburn

One thing that Ohio State didn’t need after missing on at least one 5-star target was to lose anyone. Unfortunately, that’s what happened on Wednesday afternoon as 4-star corner Kayin Lee (No. 209 overall) flipped from the Buckeyes and committed to Auburn.

Wednesday, Dec. 21 – Ohio State misses on Matayo Uiagalelei as 5-star commits to Oregon

The brother of former Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei, 5-star EDGE Matayo Uiagalelei, was a big target for the Buckeyes and they appeared to have as good of a shot at landing him as any. However, OSU missed out on the California native as Uiagalelei announced his commitment to Oregon on Wednesday.

Wednesday, Dec. 21 – Buckeyes get surprise commitment from 4-star Joshua Mickens

Ryan Day and his staff had been expecting that they would get a commitment from 4-star EDGE and No. 131 overall recruit Joshua Mickens but weren’t expecting that announcement until January. He gave the Buckeyes a pleasant surprise on Wednesday, however, as he committed to Ohio State at a ceremony held at his high school in Indianapolis.

Saturday, Dec. 17 – 2024 5-star QB and No. 1 recruit Dylan Raiola decommits from Ohio State

While not part of the 2023 class, the Buckeyes did get some rough news over the weekend as the No. 1 overall recruit and QB in the 2024 class, Dylan Raiola, annouced that he’d decommitted from Ohio State after previously pledging to head to Columbus. This adds a new wrinkle moving forward for the program.
