Georgia didn’t even have to work hard to find bulletin-board material

Ohio State star Jack Sawyer foolishly provided Georgia with some elite bulletin-board material.

Ohio State may be the massive underdog to Georgia in the Peach Bowl, but that did not stop Buckeyes pass-rusher Jack Sawyer from giving the Dawgs some low-hanging fruit to chew on.

The winner of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl between No. 4 Ohio State and No. 1 Georgia will play the winner of the VRBO Fiesta Bowl between No. 3 TCU and No. 2 Michigan in the national championship next Monday night in Los Angeles. Though all four teams certainly have a shot at winning it all, it would be more shocking than not if anybody other than Georgia repeats in 2022.

Sawyer said something at the podium on Wednesday morning he may end up seriously regretting.

"“I think we’ve got advantages across the board on both sides. We’ve just got to go execute,” said Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer about the entire Georgia roster ahead of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl."

Georgia lives to play with its own food, but Ohio State is not a team willing to get its hands dirty.

What makes the Dawgs the overwhelming favorite to repeat as national champions is three-fold. One, they have already done so with many of these players on the roster. Two, they have arguably the deepest roster in college football, so attrition of any sort is not going to faze them. And three, few teams are as well-equipped to out-execute the opposition quite like Kirby Smart’s team can.

Although one could argue Ohio State might have comparable talent to Georgia, the Buckeyes are not going to out-execute the Dawgs, all things equal. Ohio State has had its challenges with Michigan the last two years. The Wolverines are a lesser version of Georgia. Ohio State also had issues with Utah in last year’s Rose Bowl. The Utes are a lesser version of Michigan in some ways.

As far as who could upend Georgia, Ohio State may have the talent, but not the same level of execution. TCU thrives in chaos and could out-execute the Dawgs, in theory. However, the Horned Frogs do not have the talent to beat Michigan and Georgia back-to-back, which is their most likely pathway to an unheard of national title. Michigan is probably the best equipped to upset Georgia.

For Sawyer to say the Buckeyes have advantages all across the gridiron when it comes to Georgia, did he see what the Dawgs did to high-quality competition this year? The Dawgs played their best when their best was required. They blew out Oregon and South Carolina, as well as imposed their will on the likes of Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU. So how did Ohio State fare vs. Michigan?

Look. If the Buckeyes upend the Dawgs in Atlanta, then give Sawyer and the rest of Ryan Day’s team all the credit in the world for pulling off such a monumental upset in Georgia’s own backyard. However, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be absurdly loud and the Peach Bowl will be played in front of a very pro-UGA crowd. The Dawgs already beat Oregon and LSU on this same field this season…

Ultimately, you don’t know what you don’t know … until you know. The Dawgs didn’t need any bulletin-board material ahead of this game, but Sawyer gave the reigning national champions some low-hanging fruit to chomp on. Sawyer may be tasked with getting after Heisman Trophy finalist Stetson Bennett IV, but the same rules apply for Jalen Carter in hot pursuit of C.J. Stroud.

Ohio State could match Georgia’s speed, but the Buckeyes are not going to out-execute them, too.
