1. Keep in mind the mystique of Kirby Smart doing this all at his alma mater

In theory, Smart would probably need to coach into his mid-to-late 60s at a 10-win-per-year clip to eventually surpass Saban in the all-time wins category. And while he remains six national championship wins back of even tying Saban, Smart may not even have to hit that number to potentially become the new GOAT of college football coaching. There has to be something else…

Frankly, it has been right in front of us the entire time. Besides time being on his side on this daunting quest, the best thing that Smart has going for him is he is coaching at his alma mater. You simply cannot put a price on that. More importantly, Smart does not seem to be the type of head coach who will want a taste of the NFL. He has already won a national title at his dream job.

Assuming Smart can sustain an annual 10-win clip, he will be coaching his alma mater’s football team for as long as he wants. We are talking about him becoming like one of his mentors in Bobby Bowden at Florida State. It is not just that Smart is winning big at his alma mater, but his alma mater happens to be one of five programs in the nation where this type of winning is sustainable.

Winning like this was not possible for Saban at Kent State, but it is the standard for Smart at UGA.
