Who will be Georgia’s quarterback after Stetson Bennett IV leaves?
By John Buhler
Stetson Bennett IV will leave behind an incredible legacy as the Georgia Bulldogs quarterback.
Replacing a legend is never easy, but somebody has to start at quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs next year in place of Stetson Bennett IV.
The sixth-year senior from Blackshear, Georgia will be taking his talents to the NFL after the national championship game. Regardless of how the game shakes out between the Dawgs and the TCU Horned Frogs at SoFi, Bennett leaves college football as one of its most incredible stories, as well as one of its best players. The Mailman is the greatest underdog this sport has ever seen.
With Bennett giving it the old college try in the NFL next year, here is who could be replacing him.
Georgia: Who replaces Stetson Bennett IV as starting quarterback in 2023?
Here is the Georgia depth chart at quarterback heading into the national championship game:
- Stetson Bennett IV (redshirt senior)
- Carson Beck (redshirt sophomore)
- Brock Vandagriff (redshirt freshman)
- Gunner Stockton (true freshman)
One would expect Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff to be in a highly-contested battle for the starting job out of spring practice and into fall camp. If it becomes very clear one is better than the other, the loser will probably hit the transfer portal. Beck has played more over the last three years than Vandagriff. However, Vandagriff is the local five-star product, while Beck is from Jacksonville.
As far as true freshman Gunner Stockton is concerned, he is not expected to win the job out of camp, but keep in mind that Georgia did not land a quarterback in the 2023 recruiting cycle. Thus, we are not expecting to see more than one from this trio hit the transfer portal, barring the Dawgs signing a guy who is in the portal already. Bennett is homegrown, but he did transfer away before.
Right now, it is too early to tell who will win the starting job to replace Bennett next year. However, Beck is certainly talented enough to be starting at many places across the country. Vandagriff has the higher upside of the two. Stockton is a former four-star from Rabun County. It is going to come down to who has a greater command of Todd Monken’s offense after fall camp comes to an end.
The smart money would be on Beck, but if Monken were to leave for another job, and Mike Bobo were to be running offense again, that opens up another can of worms. It may force the Dawgs to hit the portal to see what is still out there. Assuming Monken stays, nothing shocking happens during spring practice and fall camp goes according to plan, what up, Beck! This is where it’s at.
Two turntables and a microphone got nothing on this emerging 2023 Georgia quarterback battle.
