How many national championships has Georgia won?
By John Buhler
The Georgia Bulldogs are poised to win back-to-back national titles for the first time ever.
All that stands between the Georgia Bulldogs and back-to-back national championships are the TCU Horned Frogs.
Georgia won its first national title since 1980 a postseason ago. The Dawgs finally had their day vs. the Alabama Crimson Tide. Kirby Smart beat his mentor Nick Saban head-to-head for the first time. His program received the validation it deserved after so many years of heartbreaking pain. If the Dawgs do defeat the Horned Frogs, we will be in the midst of a new college football dynasty.
With that in mind, how many national championships has the Georgia football team ever claimed?
Georgia football: How many national championships have the Bulldogs won?
The Dawgs have claimed three national championships: 1942, 1980 and 2021. Georgia does not claim national titles in 1920, 1927, 1946 and 1968. While most people remember the defensive juggernaut from a year ago led by unanimous All-Americans Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean, 1980 was all about freshman Herschel Walker. Heisman winner Frank Sinkwich led the Dawgs in 1942.
Though one would think a storied football program like Georgia’s would have won more than three national titles to date, the Dawgs are one win away from making it four and most importantly, two in a row. In the College Football Playoff era, winning a national title is even more challenging. Teams like the Dawgs end up playing 15 games in a season. They have a shot at getting to 15-0.
Ultimately, it would be seen as a massive disappointment if the Dawgs did not get it done vs. the Frogs at SoFi Stadium on Monday night. Though the Horned Frogs are well-coached and certainly battle-tested, Georgia has the necessary big-game experience on their side here. Perhaps most importantly, the Dawgs have a level of depth upstart TCU does not. This should matter in the end.
Here is to the Dawgs becoming the next great dynasty in college football with national title No. 4.
