Shane Beamer claps back at pro-Clemson media take after missing on Garrett Riley
By John Buhler
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer was not having this pro-Clemson Garrett Riley take.
Shane Beamer is totally comfortable with who South Carolina’s new offensive coordinator is.
Despite being in the mix to pry Garrett Riley away from TCU, in-state rival Clemson landed the Frank Broyles Award winner days after the Horned Frogs played for a national title. With former Gamecocks offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield joining Matt Rhule’s staff in Nebraska, it has been about a month since Beamer hired Dowell Loggains away from Arkansas to replace him.
Of course, Beamer took umbrage to Marc Ryan’s pro-Clemson take about the Riley hire over the airwaves on The Fan Upstate. South Carolina may have won the most recent Palmetto Bowl, but Clemson has run the state for the better part of a decade now. No doubt about it, the Gamecocks are certainly trending up, but they still have a long ways to go to catch the ACC Tigers by their toes.
For better or worse, Beamer is letting his small-market energy show in a big way with this tweet.

Prior to taking over at South Carolina in 2021, Beamer had been on Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma Sooners staff for three years. Garrett Riley is the younger brother of the USC head coach. Although he may not have worked with the up-and-coming hot-shot coordinator, Beamer is very familiar with him. As for poaching Loggains away from Arkansas, this is his fifth time being a coordinator.
Frankly, both rival teams are in a good spot over their new offensive coordinator hires. South Carolina has an outside shot of contending for an SEC Championship with star quarterback Spencer Rattler coming back for one more season. Of course, the Gamecocks will need to beat another major rival in two-time defending national champions Georgia … Between the Hedges…
As for the Tigers, Riley may be the guy to get the most out of sophomore sensation Cade Klubnik. Not only that, but Dabo Swinney was able to bring back another familiar face in former Clemson offensive coordinator Jeff Scott after he failed miserably running the South Florida Bulls into the ground. Of course, Clemson plays in an ACC that is starting to see Florida State make a bit of a run.
Ultimately, Beamer has been chippy ever since taking over in Columbia. This is part of his brand. While it has served South Carolina’s ascendence over the last two years, it can be exhausting at times. Beating annual rivals Tennessee and Clemson at the end of the year are one thing, but not getting your clock cleaned by the Dawgs is a totally different beast. They run college football now.
Shockingly, we actually have a compelling annual football rivalry in The Palmetto State once again.
