The Kyrie Irving trade came quickly on Sunday when the Mavericks pulled off the trade with the Nets and NBA Twitter went off after the news. 

Just a few days after Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, the team found a deal for the mercurial guard.

On Sunday, Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Nets had reached a deal with the Dallas Mavericks on a Kyrie Irving trade that will pair the guard with another superstar in the backcourt, Luka Doncic.

The blockbuster trade turned out not to be quite as lucrative as expected but did kick off the week of the NBA Trade Deadline with a bang.

Considering some of the ideas thrown around as a possible Kyrie Irving trade package, this feels like a huge win for the Mavericks. They don’t give up a first-round pick until 20219 and gave away two role players to pair Irving with Doncic. And if they can extend Irving, that’s an even bigger win for Dallas.

Naturally, there were plenty of jokes made at Irving’s expense regarding his connection and controversy regarding conspiracy theories and NBA Twitter had no problem making those jokes. And it’s a great point to wonder what the Mavericks fandom will look like given how beloved Doncic is and how largely unliked Irving is.

Even still, the basketball should be highly entertaining and, for the sake of Dallas, hopefully quite effective.
