Jets might be hoping to trade for Aaron Rodgers before he sees daylight again
By Josh Wilson
The New York Jets have hinted at an Aaron Rodgers trade since the season ended, but they’ve finally formall inquired according to an NFL reporter.
Aaron Rodgers is going dark, and by the time the Green Bay Packers quarterback re-sensors himself, he might think he’s still in some sort of sensory-deprivation dream like Darius from Atlanta when he wakes up a New York Jet.
The Jets desire to land Rodgers has been no big secret all offseason. Head coach Robert Saleh and others in the organization have referred to their desire to add a starting “veteran” QB this offseason. That’s long been thought to be a reference to Rodgers, though it could also include Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, or even Lamar Jackson.
According to Jeremy Fowler on this fine NFL Sunday, the Jets have formally contacted the Packers to check on Rodgers’ availability.
Aaron Rodgers’ retirement decision comes before trade talk
Rodgers is entering his sensory deprivation tank, or whatever the heck he’s doing, to determine his NFL future. Primarily, that starts with whether or not he wants to continue his carer. The four-time MVP could very well call it quits and simply retire.
If he doesn’t retire, it sounds like the Packers want to move forward with him based on reports on Sunday, despite conflicting reports on that front over the last few weeks.
But if Rodgers wants a trade, or is open to one, the Jets will be first in line.
While the idea of being traded to the Jets in previous years may have been met with a retirement threat, the Jets have stronger bones now thanks to quality coaching and good recent drafting. Rodgers might be open to it for the change of scenery if nothing else after a dramatic last few years in Green Bay.
It’s wild to think that the Jets might have a better shot at a Super Bowl next year with Rodgers than the Packers.
It would be comical, though, for Rodgers to follow Brett Favre’s career track almost identically. Favre quarterbacked the Packers as a starter for 16 years, the Jets for one, and concluded his career with two years on the Vikings.
Rodgers is a 15-year starter in Green Bay. Maybe he’s ready for his one year with the Jets before an inevitable jump to the Vikings?
