Georgia replaces Todd Monken in the most sensible manner possible
By John Buhler
Todd Monken goes to the NFL and Georgia replaces him internally by promoting Mike Bobo.
Georgia knew it was probably going to lose Todd Monken all along, so Kirby Smart did what any DGD would do and promoted fellow UGA alum Mike Bobo from within.
Although the Harbaugh Brothers are doing their damnedest to try to ruin the two-time defending national champions, promoting Bobo from within was always going to be the move they would make to counterbalance a Monken departure to the NFL. Bobo quarterbacked Georgia in the 1990s and was the Dawgs’ star offensive coordinator under Mark Richt for nearly a full decade.
Bobo spent last season as an offensive analyst after being let go by the tire fire that was Auburn.
Georgia predictably promotes Mike Bobo to OC after losing Todd Monken to NFL
While Monken is beloved in Athens for what he did with Stetson Bennett IV as his quarterback, there are certainly mixed reviews when it comes to Bobo. I know first-hand what Bobo’s UGA offense is capable of, as his run at offensive coordinator overlapped with my time in undergrad. From Matthew Stafford to Nick Chubb, seemingly any Georgia offensive star flourished under him.
However, there was always a definite ceiling with him at the helm. Recruiting was usually strong, but play-calling in critical situations were an entirely different issue. It is this combination that made Monken an Athenian legend. He put his players in positions to succeed, and boy, did they! In short, Bobo was an excellent coordinator under Richt, but you were always left wanting a bit more.
Frankly, the reason why Smart promoted from within makes all the sense in the world. He needed to replace a quarterbacks coach and a play-caller in Monken. Bobo absolutely checks both boxes. This move also allows other offensive coaches on thier staff to continue to thrive in their roles, whether that be Todd Hartley (TE), Bryan McClendon (WR) Dell McGee (RB) or Stacy Searels (OL).
While I totally understand why some of Dawg Nation may not love this promotion of sorts, look at how well promoting fellow UGA alum Will Muschamp worked out replacing Dan Lanning who went to Oregon after last season. Muschamp is a former head coach as well, but built his reputation on being a fiery defensive coordinator. It should be noted Bobo and Muschamp’s sons play for Smart…
It may be a bit insular, but Smart has earned the right to go in this direction. He was not going to be able to keep Bobo on staff forever as an offensive analyst. Although this move may hurt the upward trajectory of some of the guys on his staff, continuity will be key in Georgia emerging as college football’s next dynasty. But before we can Fire Mike Bobo, we must first Hire Mike Bobo.
Now that Monken has decided what he wanted to do, Georgia can be full-steam ahead with Bobo.
