Cornerback and NFL Draft prospect Cam Smith told FanSided which moment during his time at South Carolina he will remember forever.
With the 2022 football season over, it is officially time for the 2023 NFL Draft. On March 2, those who declared for the draft will participate in the Scouting Combine to participate in positional drills and to interview with prospective teams. When it comes to the cornerback class, it is incredibly deep with many options possible for the first round. One of them is Cam Smith, who played four years with the South Carolina Gamecocks football program.
Smith spoke with FanSided’s Sean Daley at Super Bowl 57 radio row last week representing SAXX underwear, and was asked what is one moment during his time playing at South Carolina. Smith said that his greatest memory was the final two weeks of the 2022 season.
“Beating Tennessee and then turn around and beating Clemson on their home field, and end a 42-game winning streak,” said Smith.
Cam Smith reveals moment he’ll remember most from his time at South Carolina
That was truly a great end to the 2022 regular season for the Gamecocks.
Sitting at 6-4 on the year, South Carolina played the role of spoiler down the stretch for two potential College Football Playoff candidates. On Nov. 19, the Gamecocks played the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers, who had one loss on the year, and ended their Playoff aspirations. In South Carolina’s 63-38 win, Smith recorded seven total tackles and one tackle for loss.
Then the following week, they faced off against No. 8 Clemson. Trailing 30-21 in the third quarter, the Gamecocks scored 10 unanswered points in the form of a 72-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Spencer Rattler to wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. and a 35-yard field goal by Mitch Jeter to give them the 31-30 victory. With that, Clemson lost their first home game since their 43-42 defeat to Pittsburgh on Nov. 19, 2016.
This season, Smith recorded 27 total tackles (23 solo, four assisted), five passes defensed, and one interception. Through his four years, Smith logged 91 total tackles (69 solo, 22 assisted), 18 passes defensed, six interceptions, and 3.5 tackles for loss.
Smith is set for the NFL Draft, where he could be selected in the first-round. When it comes to what moments he will remember forever, it will be South Carolina’s wins over Tennessee and Clemson.
