Deuce Roberson comes home to Colorado football as part of Coach Prime’s vision
Wide receiver Deuce Roberson transferred to Colorado football from the JUCO level at Snow College where he sees the vision from Coach Prime.
The challenges to succeed as a college athlete, particularly when taking the junior college route, are numerous — something that I can relate to first-hand. For many football players suiting up for JUCOs, the goal is to play Division I football. That’s the opportunity at hand for former Snow College wide receiver Deuce Roberson as he joins the Colorado football program.
Roberson arrives in Boulder, not far from his native Colorado Springs, after two years at Snow College and after setting a Colorado state high school record for career receiving yards at Palmer Ridge with 4,042. Now he’s coming to the Buffaloes at the same time as Deion Sanders, part of the Coach Prime effect.
So what does Roberson expect to accomplish for Colorado football under the watch of Coach Prime? He discussed his path to this point and future with the Buffs.
Colorado football: Meet Deuce Roberson, a new face joining Coach Prime
Omaryan: For those that don’t know who you are, who is Deuce Roberson, and where are you from?
Deuce Roberson: I am a family man who bases his life on his strong Christian faith and core values of loyalty, honesty, and integrity. I am an extremely hard worker who is going to bet on myself every single chance I get. I’m from Colorado Springs, Colorado (719) and I am proud to be from my city.
O: How did you like your time at Snow College? And would you recommend the JUCO route for other high school athletes?
Roberson: My time at Snow had many ups and downs. It’s a mental grind and I was able to end up on the winning side of the battle. The junior college route isn’t for everyone. No matter who you were in high school, or at your previous college (if you’re a bounce-back) simply doesn’t matter in any way. You’re going to war with a bunch of hungry guys who are there to get themselves out and oftentimes put themselves and their families in a better position. It’s not for the average person but if you know your “why” and if you have that “grit” it’s a great way to assess your work ethic and your “want” to succeed.
O: What was the deciding factor in choosing Colorado?
Roberson: Many factors played into choosing Colorado. Obviously, I’m from Colorado, but it was the vision that Coach Prime and the rest of the staff have for this program. Another huge thing for me was being close to my family and being able to continue playing with one of my best friends and Junior College teammate, Isaiah Jatta.
O: I know we see the videos of coach prime and his powerful energy through social media. I know personally that energy would electrify me on a day-to-day basis, what about you?
Roberson: Coach Prime is a high-energy coach and he inspires you to be your best in every aspect of the game. He, as a coach and mentor, is a perfect fit for the type of person and competitor I am. I love hearing his knowledge and advice and I do my best to implement everything he offers into my everyday life.
O: What are your personal and team goals for this upcoming season?
Roberson: My personal goals are nothing without the alignment of our team goals. We want to win and we want to win now. We are champions and we will be champions at the conference level and the national level. There’s no time for games. Most of us that just got here are older guys coming from prestigious programs and backgrounds that have pushed us to become the greatest versions of ourselves. Many, if not all of us, have something or someone to work for. It’s bigger than any individual and the way we are wired will allow each individual to find success and reach the goals we have set for ourselves at the end of the day.
O: And my last question is what kind of music are you playing before the game to get into that mode?
Roberson: Before my games, I watch the YouTube video “It’s not just about you” by Inky Johnson. It’s a ritual I have. I also call my family and let them know how grateful I am for their constant love and support and remind them I’m going to make it to the top for the sacrifices they’ve made and continue to make for me. As far as music, I’m big on Rod Wave, Polo G, and Lil Baby…. I’m not a headbanger or a big hype guy. I’m calm before the storm, save my energy for that first whistle and exhaust it until the last.
Roberson is one of more than 40 new faces in the Colorado football program this season, but he and Coach Prime appear ready to enact their vision for the Buffaloes in their new form. We’d like to thank him for his time.
