Is Tiger Woods playing THE PLAYERS Championship?
Tiger Woods is a past winner at THE PLAYERS Championship but, after his PGA Tour return at the Genesis weeks ago, is he playing at TPC Sawgrass this week?
It was a magical scene in California when Tiger Woods made his first PGA Tour start in over two years at the Genesis Invitational. Even better was the unquestioned GOAT of golf making the cut and playing through the weekend. That, however, got people speculating about what’s next.
With cryptic comments about potentially adding another PGA Tour start to his schedule in addition to trying to play in all four major championships, many people circled this week at THE PLAYERS Championship as a potential big-time, big-money event that he could come back again to.
After all, Woods is a two-time champion at TPC Sawgrass.
So with THE PLAYERS Championship set to get underway on March 9, people are wondering if Tiger Woods will indeed be making a second PGA Tour start leading up to The Masters in April.
Is Tiger Woods playing THE PLAYERS Championship?
Unfortunately, Tiger Woods will not be at THE PLAYERS Championship this week. There were indications leading up to Friday’s deadline to submit to play at TPC Sawgrass that we might not see Woods again until Augusta, but it was made official when his name was not listed in the field for the week in Ponta Vedra Beach, FL.
Why isn’t Tiger Woods playing THE PLAYERS Championship?
Really, the bulk of what Woods is going through right now is all about maintenance of his body and health. While his limp looked noticeably better at the Genesis than it did at the end of last year, particularly at St. Andrews, he’s been dealing with ankle soreness and plantar fasciitis. Though he can play through them, the biggest issue is truly walking 72 holes and managing the pain in doing so. It’s most likely that he felt like teeing it up at TPC Sawgrass would hinder him from his goal of playing all four majors this season.
When will Tiger Woods play next?
This is the big question that everyone is asking but, if he does make another start on the PGA Tour, it almost surely won’t be before The Masters. The expectation should be that we will next see Tiger Woods at the place where he’s been an iconic multi-time champion and where he made his return to golf last year after his 2021 car accident, Augusta National Golf Club for The Masters.
