3 things Arch Manning needs to do in Spring Practice to take Quinn Ewers job
By John Buhler
1. Let’s just be real here: Take better care of the football than your student ID
Ball security is job security, yours and mine. As long as Manning takes better care of the football than his Texas student ID, the Longhorns should be alright. But even if he doesn’t, there is hope for him securing the bag at some point once again in his mid-20s. Look no further than the fumble master himself Danny Dimes, and he learned from his uncles’ version of Yoda in David Cutcliffe.
This really is how the starting job will be decided at Texas. While neither underclassman may have exceptional control of the offense, the one who refrains from putting the ball on the turf on the reg may win the job. Even more so, the one who finds the right balance of throwing the ball down the field with conviction without it always being a pickapalooza should turn out fine for the Longhorns.
Ultimately, Manning can win the starting job over Ewers if he is simply on it. He does not lose his focus, while simultaneously being one of the guys. It is all about gaining the trust of his teammates and giving Sarkisian and his staff every reason to believe in him. Whoever plays with the most amount of confidence will likely lead the Longhorns out of the tunnel entering Week 1.
Although Manning could technically beat out Ewers this spring, the results are not in until the fall.
