Caleb Williams makes bold declaration for 2023 season
By John Buhler
Caleb Williams revealed that he believes he can repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner.
USC quarterback Caleb Williams wants to do something only Ohio State legend Archie Griffin ever accomplished: Repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner.
Williams has a fantastic chance at it. He is the best returning player in the country heading into his true junior year. USC is a national brand and he plays for a head coach in Lincoln Riley who knows how to get his players to New York City with jaw-dropping numbers. However, elite players do not repeat as Heisman winners. College stars like Tim Tebow, Lamar Jackson and Bryce Young did not.
Williams told Griffin himself that he expects to shake his hand again in New York next December.
One thing is certain. If Williams is to repeat as next year’s Heisman winner, he has to be unreal.
Caleb Williams is a firm believer that he can win the Heisman Trophy again
Look. If Williams wins back-to-back Heisman Tropheis, then god bless him, but that ain’t happening, bruh. For him to repeat, he will need to put forth a 2019 Joe Burrow-esque season. His numbers will have to be absolutely ridiculous and USC cannot lose more than maybe one game. They probably need to go undefeated and beat Williams’ arch nemesis of Utah to get his second.
This really has nothing to do with Williams, but rather the voters themselves. Voter fatigue is a real thing. I mean, Jackson put up better numbers in 2017 than he did in 2016 and still didn’t beat out Baker Mayfield. Williams will be going back to New York, but it will more likely be Drake Maye out of UNC or Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington joining this college football fraternity instead.
Overall, I am all for Williams trying his best to match Griffin, but the odds are not in his favor. USC needs to make the playoff at the very least for this to be a real possibility. While I think any awful NFL franchise should take him No. 1 overall next spring, I just don’t think he’s repeating as the Heisman. He would probably rather win a national title and go No. 1 overall than repeat anyway.
Simply put, for Williams to repeat as a Heisman winner, it needs to be Mariano Rivera unanimous.
