New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz suffered what looked to be a serious injury after the final out of Puerto Rico’s win over the Dominican Republic.
With the win, Puerto Rico advances to the next round of the tournament, while the Dominican Republic will go home.
As great of an experience as the WBC has been for baseball fans around the world, New York mets supporters are probably wishing it never occurred right now. Edwin Diaz, arguably the best closer in baseball, suffered what looked to be a serious knee injury while celebrating after the final out.
Diaz and the Puerto Rico players were jumping in a dogpile of sorts after advancing, which is where the injury occurred. The Mets closer was taken off the field in a wheelchair.
New York’s World Series chances just took a major hit, especially if Diaz is out long term.
World Baseball Classic: Alexis Diaz breaks down after brother Edwin Diaz’s injury
This year’s Puerto Rican team represented so much hope for the Diaz brothers, as it was their first chance to play on the same professional team together. To advance to the quarterfinals, especially against the favored Dominican side, would’ve meant everything.
Alexis Diaz was visibly emotional after his brother’s injury, which is understandable given the magnitude of the moment.
Diaz went for immediate tests after being taken off the field. Initially, he pointed to his right knee, and couldn’t put any weight on his leg. It’s unclear just how serious the injury is at this time, but it looked scary in the moment.
Without Diaz in the fold, one would expect New York to turn to a pair of veteran relievers in Adam Ottavino and David Robertson to close games. The Mets have been bit by the injury bug already to start the year, with Jose Quintana, Sam Coonrod and Bryce Montes de Oca on the IL.
