New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz couldn’t put any weight on his leg after celebrating Puerto Rico’s win in the World Baseball Classic.

The fear of any MLB team is their star player suffering an injury during the World Baseball Classic, which just so happens to take place weeks before Opening Day. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, they may have seen one of their most important players go down with a potentially serious injury.

On Wednesday night, closer Edwin Diaz recorded the final out in Puerto Rico’s game against the Dominican Republic, clinching the 5-2 win and a berth in the quarterfinals. As Puerto Rico celebrated, Diaz fell down on the field and grabbed at his right knee. Diaz had to be helped off the field, where he noticeably couldn’t put any weight on his right leg. Eventually, he had to be placed in a wheelchair.

Team Puerto Rico was shocked seeing Diaz struggling to put any pressure on his right leg. Diaz’s brother, Alexis, was seen crying while watching him get taken off of the field.

This is a potentially serious hit for the Mets. He solidified his status as one of the best closers in all of baseball this past season, as he recorded a 1.31 ERA, a 0.839 WHIP, 118 strikeouts, and 18 walks over 62.0 innings pitched. Diaz also recorded 32 saves in 35 opportunities.

With the victory, Puerto Rico clinched a berth in the quarterfinals, where they will take on Mexico, the winners of Pool C.

Entering this past offseason as a free agent, the Mets rewarded him with a five-year, $102 million contract.

We will continue to keep you updated on Diaz’s status once more details are provided.
