Los Angeles Dodgers star Freddie Freeman sat out of Team Canada’s final WBC game against Mexico. Just how serious is the first baseman’s injury?
The World Baseball Classic is heading into the quarterfinals, with Pools C and D determining their winners and runner-ups. The tournament is taking place in the midst of spring training, with Opening Day taking place on March 30. With that, there is fear that some of the big stars competing in the WBC will suffer an injury.
For the Los Angeles Dodgers, they received quite the scare in the group stage.
On Tuesday night, first baseman Freddie Freeman left Canada’s game against Colombia due to a hamstring injury. Although it did take place in the third inning of that game, he left the game in the bottom of the fourth. The following day, it was determined that Freeman would not play in Canada’s game against Mexico.
Dodgers fans are probably wondering if Freeman will be healthy enough to start the 2023 season.
How serious is Freddie Freeman’s injury?
At the time of the injury, Canada manager Ernie Whitt said that Freeman was dealing with tightness of the hamstring.
While speaking with the media on Wednesday, Dodgers manager Dave Robert described Freeman’s right hamstring injury as “mild,” and said that he would be back “sooner than we all expect.”

Additionally, it was revealed that Freeman had been getting treatment for his hamstring injury since he arrived at Camelback Ranch, the Dodgers’ spring training facility.
The last thing Dodgers fans needed to hear about was an injury to one of their top players. They already watched as shortstop Gavin Lux get ruled out for the entirety of the 2023 season after tearing his ACL during spring training.
Last season, his first with the Dodgers, Freeman led the National League with a .407 on-base percentage, 47 doubles, 117 runs scored, and 199 hits in 708 plate appearances. Freeman also recorded a .325 batting average, a .511 slugging percentage, 21 home runs, and 100 RBI.
With the Dodgers set to open up their season on March 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the fanbase will be closely monitoring Freeman’s status.
