The Aaron Rodgers trade may finally happen, as the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets are talking.

Why they weren’t talking previously I do not know, but Aaron Rodgers will be a member of the New York Jets, it’s just a matter of when.

With Lamar Jackson available as well. Robert Saleh and Joe Douglass were asked about the possibility of chasing another quarterback should the Rodgers trade be delayed in any way. Both denied interest, stating they respect Jackson as a player but are committed to No. 12. That was the right answer, especially at this point in the negotiating process.

The Packers are sticklers for a first-round pick in exchange for Rodgers, but the Jets aren’t biting so far. On Monday, Brian Gutekunst did say that Green Bay wasn’t necessarily determined to receive that sort of compensation when all is said and done.

So, what will it take to get the ball rolling on these negotiations?

Aaron Rodgers rumors: Jets, Packers are talking

Per Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, Aaron Rodgers will eventually be traded for two high draft picks.

"“The trade is currently orbiting a deal that would swap Rodgers for two high draft picks, according to multiple sources who spoke with Yahoo Sports. The sources characterized a deal as getting “closer” despite stiff negotiation…”"

The stiff negotiation, per Robinson, is a draft pick ‘give back’ of some sort if Rodgers doesn’t play in the 2024 season. New York — like most of the NFL landscape — doesn’t know exactly how long Rodgers intends to play. While his contract runs through 2024, he could easily call it quits after this season, especially if the Jets aren’t as competitive as he hopes.

Were that scenario to play out, New York doesn’t want to be on the hook for a future draft pick when Rodgers only played one season. Green Bay isn’t up for that part of the trade, at least not yet.
