Will Zalatoris has been a stalwart at majors, but the young star had to withdraw from The Masters with an injury, making golf fans everywhere sad.

Over the past few years, Will Zalatoris has made himself a common thread in contention at major championships. And that’s been particularly true at The Masters, where he’d made two starts in his career coming into the 2023 tournament. In those two trips, he finished outright second to Hideki Matsuyama in 2021 and then T6 a year ago.

So coming into the 2023 Masters Tournament, there were many people who had high hopes for more Zalatoris magic. Sadly, he didn’t even get to hit a shot.

Prior to his tee time on Thursday for the first round, Will Zalatoris had to withdraw from The Masters due to an undisclosed injury.

Why did Will Zalatoris withdraw from The Masters?

Though there is not an official diagnosis, Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel reported that Zalatoris withdrew from The Masters due to a back injury.

That’s a concerning update for the young star in the golf world. Zalatoris suffered two herniated discs in his back during the FedExCup Playoffs last year, right after the first win of his career. This caused him to miss the final two playoff events and the entire fall swing until he played at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Golf fans lament Will Zalatoris withdrawing from The Masters

With such a fan-favorite having to withdraw like Zalatoris did, golf fans were sad and shocked at the news.

Perhaps the best point made is that Will Zalatoris needs to take all the time he can to get this injury treated and corrected. He’s far too young and far too talented to let something like this derail him this early in his career.

Best of luck to him, even if he won’t be playing Augusta National this week, and best wishes that he gets past this injury sooner rather than later.
