Most golf fans know that what they need to about the regular cut on the PGA Tour. In a normal event, the Top 65 players and ties after 36 holes make it to play the weekend. When we travel to The Masters and Augusta National Golf Club, though, that’s no longer the case.

The Masters cut rules vary from just about every tournament in the world but there’s a good reason for that. Of the four major championships, by far the smallest field comes to Augusta, with only 85-100 players teeing it up for the week.

Because of that, keeping the Top 65 and ties, frankly, wouldn’t make a lot of sense, especially with older past champions being part of that 90-100 players. So what are The Masters cut rules then? Let’s take a look.

Masters cut rules: How may players make the cut at The Masters?

The current Masters cut rules are that the Top 50 players and tied after 36 holes will play the weekend, eliminating the within 10 shots of the lead qualifier that was long in place at this vaunted tournament.

The Masters cut has undergone several changes over the years. The first cut created in 1957 saw the Top 40 and ties make the cut. That was bumped up to the Top 44 and ties in 1962 and, four years later in 1966, that was also made to include any player within 10 strokes of the lead. In 2013, that was expanded to be Top 50 and ties and anyone within 10 strokes.

However, the current cut rules at Augusta National Golf Club came into play starting in the COVID-19-delayed 2020 tournament and have stood for the years since then.

What was the cut at The Masters in 2023?

The Masters cut for the 2023 tournament was around what it has been normally, even with rainy, stormy and soggy conditions. The cut line ended at +3 (147) after the first 36 holes with 54 players from the 87-player field going on to play the weekend. Jon Rahm, of course, went on to win the Green Jacket.
